Original: A man who was reported missing in Avon since September has been found dead in a well on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 25, according to the Norfolk District Attorney's Office.

Keith McKechnie, 45, left his home on East High Street on Sept. 7 and didn’t come back, Avon police said. Family and friends had posted several pleas for help to track him down as he suffers from mental illness, and they feared he could be in danger.

A relative found McKechnie's body in a well in a heavily wooded area near his home, officials said.

Emergency crews said there were no signs of trauma on his body.

Avon police solicited help from the public to find him last week.

“Our thoughts are very much with the McKechnie family tonight,” District Attorney Morrissey said Saturday evening. “This is a very sad result.”

An autopsy was to be done as soon as Sunday, Nov. 26, or Monday, Nov. 27.
